Lost in a maze

Have you ever wandered through a maze?

As a child I loved it when the carnival came to town and I could spend time in the maze that was created out of mirrors. Since then I have indulged in that childish pastime just twice, both times in a maze that has combined the usual tricks of blind alleys and passageways that turn in on themselves with weirdly sloping walls and floors and wacky 3 dimensional impossibilities that distort perspective in a labyrinth of mind warping confusion.

As much as I enjoy this maze, I enjoy even more watching other people get confused, lost and just occasionally, panicky as they attempt release to themselves from their self-imposed torture. To stand at the end of the maze and watch individuals emerge into “normality” again is its own reward. The expressions of relief and joy are tangible and palatable as the formerly confused realize that they have been hoodwinked by skillful manipulation of their sense of how our world should be.

Sadly, today millions are caught in a perpetual and eventually soul-destroying maze. It’s the philosophy that teaches that all roads lead to God. Spend just a few minutes reading the literature that passes as “spiritual guidance” in just about any book shop, and even a “Blood bought, Spirit filled, Bible believing” saint is likely to come away confused.

Most “seekers” enter into their search for truth with a confusing array of maps and their journey deeper into the maze will only heighten their sense of bewilderment. As I began my own search for
truth and enlightenment as a teenager almost 60 years ago, I became lost, and it was only the words sown into my spirit as a little boy attending Sunday School and “Cub Scouts” that helped me find my way out of the maze!

Today there is a seeking generation that has no such “foundation” and perhaps for the first time in the last two thousand years is in danger of not hearing the gospel or having access to the spiritual heritage of their ancestors. They are lost in a maze of spiritual disinformation.

Proverbs 14:12 tells us precisely why this maze of spiritual disinformation exists….  There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death.

There is a way that seems right to man…. Therein lies the problem, as I have observed before, we all love to sing Frank Sinatra’s “theme song”…. I Did it My Way…

The trendy thing to do today is to feed on the “spiritual buffet” on offer, a virtual smorgasbord of ways to reach the “god within” Just a little bit of this, mixed with a dash of that, never becoming committed to anything, continually seeking self-gratification and “fulfillment”. Much of society
believes, in matters of the spirit at least… that any god is a good as another….  Every religion just gives us a different way of looking at Him. The overriding philosophy is that all contribute to the “greater good”.

Oddly enough this strange and confusing conglomeration of gods and beliefs is not usually applied to any other area of modern life. We don’t believe that just any old medication or archaic surgical practice is acceptable in the treatment of illness, and we certainly don’t believe it in finite provable sciences like mathematics…. Imagine the confusion if 2+2=4 was fine for me, but you believed that 2+2=96 and another person was equally convinced that 2+2=12… yet for something far more crucial (our eternal destiny) most happily go along with the lie of the dark lord, that any way to God is fine and acceptable.

Jesus addressed this confusion in His day, and His words of almost two thousand years ago are still applicable toady…. I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6

Jesus is the key to the maze; He is the way to personal peace, He is the way to life eternal. There is no other way out of the maze….
