Follow The Yellow Brick Road

Like Dorothy in the Classic story and movie, The Wizard of Oz, we are all on a journey. Whether we realize it or not the journey of life is preordained. A man’s days are numbered. You know the number of his months. He cannot live longer than the time You have set. Job 14:5

Whether our journey is long or short, smooth or rough we must travel our road to get home. We will  have  many companions who will accompany us for some of the journey, a few who accompany us for much of the journey, and if we are particularly fortunate, one or two who will journey with us for the entire trip. However our final departure for home shores will be a solo event.

We will have many trials and tribulations along the road, hopefully these will be balanced by joys and good times, but these not are guaranteed. However, like Dorothy, we have an enemy, who will try to prevent us from reaching our God given destination. Dorothy's enemy was a witch, who together with her minions (flying monkeys) tried, and almost succeeded in their efforts aimed at stopping Dorothy reaching Oz. Our enemy is much more sinister and altogether more devious than Dorothy's...he's the dark lord, and he's not just after our ruby red shoes....However we have not been left alone and ill-equipped for the journey.

We know where we are heading, The Apostle John went ahead of us, wrote a fulsome description of our destination.... I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God….And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people….They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.  ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Revelation. 21:2-4.

Our compass on this journey always points home. And that compass is FAITH.

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.” Heb. 11:8-10.

Our sustenance for the journey has been provided. The Hebrew slaves, on their 40 year wilderness journey to the Promised Land were fed Manna, which they gathered fresh every morning. Likewise we have not been without food for the journey.

Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" Matthew 4:4 NIV

I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.” John 6:51 NIV

Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’” John 6:31 NIV

Many have gone before us, family members, friends. We will likely be surprised by some that we meet when we reach our final destination, some that we didn't think would make it, but as Holy Writ tells us...  Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Romans 10:13 NIV

Mark Twain wrote "Behold the fool saith, "Put not all thine eggs in one basket,"…but the wise man saith, "Put all your eggs in the one basket and watch that basket." That to me is a clear injunction to put every effort into our journey, yet so many of us drift, aimless, wasting our numbered days.

We all face disappointments, unmet expectations, failures, rejection; it's what we do with those events that will show our mettle. We must find a way to navigate through the disappointment, to reevaluate the challenge and reemerge onto the scene. Its often said "when one door closes, another opens". I much prefer this saying... "What God opens no one can close".

I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Revelation 3:8 NIV
