A tavern in the English town of Knaresborough. |
How many times have millions of people who, fearing the end
of their temporal existence, have fallen prey to widely inaccurate prophecy? How
many more times will the “end of times” scenario play out?
It was interesting, and disturbing, to see how the whole Mayan calendar “cult” linked to Doomsday which became intertwined with the Doomsday preppers who then somehow got linked to Bible prophecy, then to the Bible, then to certain churches and ultimately they all got lumped together as fundamentalist crazies.
One well known group of "door knocking" evangelists have made at least 8 failed "end of times" predictions, the first being in 1897, the most recent being 1975. Odds are that one day they might get the date correct.
It never ceases to amaze me that so many otherwise rational people fall for the most unlikely apocalypse stories, and yet completely rubbish the Biblical “version” as outlandish or a complete “fairy story” Mind you, those same people also reject the Biblical record of creation as a myth.
That our world will end someday is axiomatic; "Once our own Sun has consumed all the hydrogen fuel in its core, it too will reach the end of its life. Astronomers estimate this to be a short 7 billion years from now. For a few million years, it will expand into a red giant, puffing away its outer layers. Then it’ll collapse down into a white dwarf and slowly cool down to the background temperature of the Universe."**

A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold. Proverbs 22:1 NIV
